Magic Wheel a sort of uniscooter

Magic wheelHere’s an odd duck – the Gaus wheel. It seems very close to a scooter version of a unicycle, that is, without the seat or pedals. There’s a small castor wheel attached to the back and a platform like on a footbike. Voilà!

The learning curve would seem to be formidable, but videos show riders enjoying remarkable maneuverability. There’s a brake somewhere, but according to the manual [pdf] it’s mainly for slowing down. Like my old orange-crate scooter, you stop by jumping off.

Thanks to Will W. on the Yahoo! KickbikeUSA mail-list.

  1. Hey Pete — thanks for detailing this! I learned of it quite a while back, so wonder why it seems not to have picked up more of a following here in the US by now. (Of course, it probably requires some practice to get the hang of it — but so did learning to ride a traditional bicycle!)
So I’m curious to try this — thus far have found only one website for a US retailer, in Florida (seems to be a company specializing in selling mechanical hoists & related items -!)….
    http://www.prohoists.com/Shopping.idc?ProductID=114
Do you have any further thoughts or info about where these can be bought domestically, so as not to pay for international shipping? (West coast of the US would be mucho helpful.. ;-)
    thanks!

  2. Cat,
My friend just got back to me – he bought his through Shipsinaday.com at http://tinyurl.com/czjmp4
    Hope this helps,
    Pete

  3. Hi Pete –
surprisingly, “shipsinaday.com” is apparently the same company as the “prohoists.com” people! (Same address, contact info, etc. etc.) Not that it really matters much, I guess… was your friend happy with the customer service he got?
    thanks again –

  4. Hey Cat,
So far; he said, “They fulfilled my order right away, and delivery will be sometime this week.” He promised to keep the Yahoo! KickbikeUSA group appraised and to let us know what it’s like to ride etc.

  5. Hi Pete – thx for the specifics — I’ll be eager to hear later about your friend’s experiences.. (I’m not a member of the Yahoo! KicbikeUSA group — haven’t joined ’cause am trying to reduce the # of memberships I need to remember -!…….)

  6. P.S. — forgot to mention this — I wouldn’t say your friend’s order has been “fulfilled” until he actually gets it delivered – ! (unless he has some way of knowing for sure that it has indeed already been shipped to him-?)
